What would it take for you to feel satisfied with your life? Fulfilled, as if everything that was happening was as you desired?  A different job, a new or changed relationship, different living arrangement, better health, more money, a vacation, closer friendships, less work, time to follow your creative passion?  The aspects of our lives that we feel at peace with don’t have to be perfect, but flow with ease. We don’t dwell on them, because for the most part we are getting what we want.

The areas of our life that aren’t fulfilling our needs are what we struggle with and notice.  They translate to the false belief that something outside of us needs to change in order for us to feel at peace.  When we believe this, we are giving our power away.  There is an energy drain precipitated by cycles of thought, feeling and behavior that reinforce staying unsatisfied.

I think of Homer Simpson holding onto the soda can he’s been trying to steal from a vending machine, while emergency workers go to great lengths to try to extract his arm.  We hold onto a certain vision of what we need to feel satisfied in a job, lover, etc.  When Homer finally realizes, he doesn’t want the soda bad enough to give up other things in his life, he let’s go of the can and pulls his arm out of the machine. He’d created his own experience of being stuck in the machine by holding on to something that wasn’t designed to be his, at least not without him being in alignment with the system that would allow it to be his.

Everything we experience is designed to show us where we are in alignment or not.  If we are attached to specific circumstances we “must have” to feel happy, a deeper look inside our Self will reveal what is out of alignment in our life, the misalignment creating a sense of lack.  Are we making a decision based on financial fear to work too much or at a job we don’t like which limits our time and energy to create in other areas?  Are we using busyness or addictions as a form of avoidance, so we won’t have to address the relationships in our life that are uncomfortable?  Are we blaming work or a relationship for our suffering and disappointment?  As long as we hold on to the belief that our happiness is contingent upon someone or something changing we will be unfulfilled and not find inner-peace.

Try this simple meditation to assist in creating a sense of peace in an area where you feel dissatisfied.

  • Begin in a simple silent meditation state (see my post a Meditative Path to Clarity).
  • Visualize a bubble floating in front of you to represent the area in your life where you feel dissatisfied unfulfilled or stuck.
  • See a rose outside of that bubble, like a magic wand, it is there to draw out any energy from that bubble that is negative or fear based.
  • Watch as energies such as control, punishment, anger, anxiety, disappointment, fear, guilt, and shame move out of the bubble into the rose.
  • Once the bubble is free of these blocks, send the rose to a faraway place in your mind’s eye and let it dissolve with the intention that it causes no harm.
  • Now imaging a golden ball of light hovering above the bubble that represents the area of your focus for the mediation.  Fill that ball of light with all of the positive vibrations (emotional energies) you would like to experience in this area of your life, such as: ease, grace, pleasure, fulfillment, joy, inspiration, flow, playfulness, support.
  • When the golden ball of light is full of good vibrations drop it into your bubble and see them become one.

You have shifted the focus in this area of your life from disappointment and lack to ease and flow with your intentions.  Our habits pull us quickly back into old thought patterns, so revisit this visualization as often as you find necessary.

Personally, I find it a very challenging practice to let go of certain desires happening in the timeframe that I want.  But whenever I hold onto the yearning for a different experience than “what is” I am less satisfied with my life.  This doesn’t mean that I give up on my hearts desires and dreams.  What it does mean is that I acknowledge that what I am experiencing right now is exactly as it should be.  As difficult as it may feel, I trust that what I am experiencing is the universe speaking to me, to show me how I can get into greater alignment with myself.

The feeling of scarcity hooks us with a belief that there’s not enough, time, energy or resources to do what needs to be done.  We feel behind. If we crank up our adrenaline to meet the demand, later we feel depleted, because we forced our actions into an agenda that was unnatural.  We give too much to work or a relationship, failing to care for our self. Inner-peace is impossible when we believe that there is not enough time or energy.  In this mindset we are harried with constant striving to fit as much as we possibly can into every day.

The lie is that there is a limited supply of what we need to feel at peace… time, energy, support, tools, love.  We have all the energy we need as long as we take care of our self with: good sleep, healthy food, exercise and meditation.   When we get hooked by scarcity thinking our entire experience is thrown off balance. We lose our ability to set good boundaries with a relationship or job because our attention is focused on the lack, the energetic hook that there is a need much greater than we can fulfill; a vacuum of energy that tugs on our belly (third chakra), a magnetic force pulling us to give more and more.

There are two practices that help us reclaim our sense of having enough time and energy. The first is maintaining our grounding.  When we’re grounded in our own energy, we can recognize the outside demand. From a centered place, we are empowered to choose how much to contribute of our life-force.  We have the clarity that we’re not responsible to rescue the situation. We see our self as a contributor and know that doing our part is enough. And we succeed in our part, regardless of what the experience is for anyone else.

A mediation tool for grounding starts with visualization of a line of energy connecting the tip of our tailbone (first chakra) to the center of the earth. That grounding cord can be seen as a waterfall, tree trunk, animal tail, or beam of light; whatever feels solid for you. Intend that the only energy in that grounding cord is your energy and kick out anyone else who is hitchhiking in your grounding space.

The second practice is to shift the energy just above your belly button (third chakra) to neutrality.  That place where you get gut feelings that signal something is amiss.  The solar plexus is where we hold our personal power, thus where demand energy hooks into our space.  It is where we feel anxiety for not having enough time that drains our energy.  Visualize the space in your belly as a crystal ball full of only your energy.  Notice that it is neutral, clear or see-through. Because it’s clear as glass, when others try to tap into your energy with demands, there’s nothing for them to attach to. Neutrality allows you respond to others needs without over giving.

Staying centered in our power rather than allowing the demands in our environment to pull us out of alignment requires practice. Choosing to believe that there is plenty of time and energy is essential if we strive to create a consistent experience of inner-peace.  By eliminating the hook of scarcity energy we can be inspired by our work, relationships, environment, home and options. We can to show-up for all of it with an authentic belief that the best possible outcome is happening and we don’t need to know what that is or how it’s going to happen. We trust it is.

My desire for a spot close to the front of the airplane had me sit in a middle seat between two women on a fight home to Denver last week.  Expecting the usual, ignore the stranger next to you, behavior of business travel, I was surprised to immediately be in conversation with the woman sitting to my right.  I can’t even remember how the conversation started but it didn’t pause until we landed two hours later.  By then I had heard 72 years of stories, Naomi’s life in a nutshell, and more importantly witnessed her joyful perspective on life.

Her vibrant energy created a shift in me, revitalizing my sense of appreciation and possibility.  Inviting me to match the level of joy she lives in.  If I blur the lens of the words that passed between us, the pure vitality Naomi offered through her positive perspective was transformational.

Each of us radiates energy that is a combination of our natural essence, our beliefs and energies we’ve held onto that we’ve accumulated along the way.  Often we don’t notice our own energy, what we are presenting as a vibration to the world.  When our energy is clear of fearful beliefs more
of our natural essence shines and we attract energy that matches what we want in our lives. In order to experience the spark of inspiration that generates transformation we have to be available to human connection.

The most powerful insights can come from the perspectives of strangers. They have a fresh perspective, one we haven’t been exposed to before.  They don’t know our history and we are inclined to listen more closely to someone we just met.  Our awareness is heightened.

The type of connection I experienced with Naomi was wonderfully unexpected.  We can prepare ourselves to recognize these opportunities and be open to the transformational energy that is available through connection.  We prepare by taking time to align our vibration with our essence. Start in a meditative space:

  • Send a psychic “hello” to your essence, your soul, your authentic Self.  Allow your inner voice to ask if there are beliefs that are pulling you out of alignment with your essence?
  • Visualize those fears, disturbances and non-aligned energies moving out of your space into a bubble.  Watch the bubble float to a distant mountain top and pop, transforming the energy into a new form.  This makes more room for your own essence to expand.  You may want to repeat this with several different focus areas in your life. Where you are showing up with a certain identity, such as work, romantic relationship, friendship, health or creative practice.
  • Imagine a big golden ball of light hovering above your head.  In the center of that ball is a magnet calling your energy back to you from any places you have left it that you are ready to retrieve it from. Once the golden ball of light is full of your essence, in your minds-eye reach up and pop it.  See the energy of your essence flow down into you, filling in all the space that was opened when you moved out the non-aligned vibrations.

We naturally attract matching vibrations into our lives.  Sometimes we have the fortune of attracting a connection that wakes us up and elevates us to a new level of self-awareness.  I believe this happens when the person we encounter can see past our current state and notices our soul’s essence.   The practice of consciously setting our energy invites connections that are transformational.

Ghost buster at Zombie Crawl Denver 2011

All Hallows Eve is creeping in with curiosity and playful energy about ghosts, zombies, paranormal and the dead in various forms.  When people feel something tangible that they can’t see or touch it can be frightening and a thrill.  As a person who is regularly aware of the presence of Spirits, I find it curious how often we make ghost or Spirits out to be scary tormented messengers of darkness.   What we are reflecting with this perception is awareness that the Spirit is stuck, disturbed, unable to move on and find peace.

We all are Spirits with a physical body and when we die our Spirit continues to exist.  What we call a ghost is the Spirit of a person, as it existed in a particular lifetime.  Ghosts linger in a physical place often where the person once spent time while alive.  Their Spirit was unable to complete some aspect of their experience from that life and remains stuck, revisiting the trauma or unfinished commitment.

On the night of the Zombie Crawl in Denver a couple of clients of mine went to a stately old hotel for a cocktail and struck up a conversation with the bartender about rumors of the hotel being haunted.  They were given permission to wander the halls to see what they might find.  With their perception tuned to the paranormal, they were open to seeing what wanted to be seen.

Suddenly in a certain hallway they both started feeling a heavy energy.  One of the women felt as if she was being choked and couldn’t breathe. They decided they’d had enough and returned to the hotel lobby, shaken.  Curious they asked a hotel employee if anything strange had ever happened in the room number they were next to when the sense of suffocation occurred.  A young woman had hung herself in that room.  Clearly the disturbance of her energy when she took her own life left her Spirit unresolved.  Her ghost is still lingering in the place of her death waiting for a healing that will allow her soul to move on.

Similarly when I see a Spiritual entity in a person’s aura space often it is stuck and ready to move on.  It has an  agreement with the person created in the past that is no longer serving either.  We create agreements with Spirits (some angels of light or darkness, some disincarnate human souls) when we need help with a life experience that we feel we can’t manage ourselves.  They help us stay safe in certain circumstances but when we outgrow the circumstances they may stay stuck in our space, required to keep the agreement.

Another way we may be associated with a Being is through our family.  Our ancestors create agreements with Spirits that get passed down through the generations to their descendants.  These Spirits can be in our energy field subtly influencing what we attract into our lives or are attracted to, without us being aware of it.

There are also Spirits that get into our aura space without personal or familial invitation.  We take them on as part of our healing agreement with another person, to help them clear the Entity.  Or we participate in an activity that opens our energy field to them.  These Spirits are looking for energy or healing, and enter our aura because we are open to it.

Spirits are everywhere. We don’t need to fear them because we are in a position of power.  We always have the authority and choice to end agreements with Spirits and command that they leave our space.  One way to do this is to visualize a gold cord attaching them to God/the Supreme Being so they can move on/out of our energy field and take their next step as a Spirit. By doing so we are setting both the Spirit and our spirit free.

Write to Access Your Intuition

An easy way to access our intuition is through writing.  Approaching our journal with intention can take us beyond recounting activities of the day and the cathartic process of purging experiences, to a point of clarity that only comes when the self is aligned with the Self.

This type of written practice is an internal conversation.  The energy it activates inside is why so many people desire to be writers.  Not only do we want our voice to be heard and find the written word a fulfilling way to share it, we connect with our essence through writing. It makes us feel good.

The inner dialog that occurs as words flow from our center-of-head (sixth chakra) through our hands (creative channels) into words, calls the mind-body-spirit into alignment. We go within and track our thoughts as they pour out.  In order to dive this deep in writing we have to commit to push past our critical voices. The aspects that want to stop us from putting into concrete form thoughts that we are programed to see as inappropriate, selfish or crazy.  It’s only in pushing through these walls of resistance by moving quickly as we write that we reach our inner-guide.

Our intuition is not some separate “thing” that resides outside of us.  It is as solid and reliable as our senses of smell, taste, touch, sight and hearing.  We just have lost our understanding of how to access the sixth-sense.  The practice of writing to access your intuition can be cultivated with a simple framework:

  • Set aside 20 minutes, less time will decrease your odds of getting past the resistance and purging of life experiences.
  • Take a deep breath and set your intention before you start
  • Commit to moving your pen on paper or fingers on the keyboard non-stop, even if your thoughts pause.  Just repeat the last word you wrote until you
    breakthrough the block.
  • Allow freedom to download trite information, and then dive into your question, directing the conversation with your Self.
  • Notice if other people’s energy shows up in your thoughts as you write.  They could be interfering with your ability to see clearly. People who are concerned about how your changes will affect them can be very psychically nosy.  Visualize their energy moving into a bubble outside of your space and send that bubble of their energy back to them.

We don’t have to know why or how we “know” information that comes to us intuitively but to disregard the guidance is to set ourselves up for more pain.  Through journaling we can cultivate this sixth-sense in a concrete way. It helps us tune into our truth, filter out the external influences on our energetic space and find clarity.

Dreaming is easy but allowing our dreams to take form can be tricky.  Our focused vision, intention and actions eventually result in opportunities to “have” what we desire. If we want the fruits of our creation to become longterm parts of our experience we need to be ready to receive by matching there vibration.

It may be hard to receive because the results don’t come in the form we imagine or because we’re more comfortable with wanting something out in the distance than having it up close.  Think of the lottery winner who ends up poorer than they were before they hit the jackpot a few years down the road.  They were able to manifest temporary financial prosperity but they couldn’t “have” it in the long run.  Their vision of themselves didn’t align with the vibration of wealth.

Blocks that keep us from having what we desire, contribute to self-sabotage such as criticism of what we’ve called into our lives.  They keep us seeking rather than satisfied.  We have manifested a dream relationship, job, financial success, vacation or home and we don’t let ourselves enjoy it.  Or we determine its flawed, we hadn’t seen the reality of it and find its not what we really wanted.  We continue to strive for a distant goal rather than appreciate the present moment. We doubt our wisdom in creation, not seeing that we’ve created powerfully and can continue to focus our positive intentions. Our needs shift and become clearer through experience. As we gain clarity on our true desire, we hone in on the feelings we would like to have while living our dream.

One way to practice receiving is through a simple meditation. With your attention centered in your meditative space, between your ears and behind your eyes (sixth chakra):

  • First insure that your energetic grounding cord, the root that connects the base of your spine to the center of the earth is fresh and set to “full release” so it’s ready to recycle any energy in your aura that you no longer need
  • See all energy blocking your receptivity fall-down your grounding cord and out of your space.  Identify vibrations ready for release such as self-sabotage, criticism, perfectionism, judgment, fear, control, unworthiness, guilt and shame.
  • When you feel your aura has been cleared of the energy that doesn’t allow you to receive, imagine a large bubble of golden light above your head filled with the vibration of “havingness.” This feels like satisfaction, gratitude and receptivity combined.  Add a pinch of joy to that bubble and watch that bubble sink down into your aura space, filling you up with this capacity to HAVE  and enjoy what you desire.

In practicing this energy clean-out and fill-in, you align your vibration with receiving.  As your dreams come into physical form you are ready to allow the goodness into you life to stay.

Identity Shifts

Each time we take on a new role or let go of a familiar one, our identity goes through a transition.  We may not know how to be, or what to tell people when they ask us questions that we had an easy answer for in the past, like “What do you do?” Letting parts of us that we valued fall away once they are no longer “in the present” feels hard. They served us well and there is comfort in familiarity.  It’s easier to stay attached to these old aspects of our Self because of the way they made us feel in the past. But once we set them free the “lightness of being” we find is often so much better.

It’s risky to let go of an old identity to make room for a new identity that is not fully formed.  There are unknown details to be worked out. It requires experimentation and exposure to the new aspects of our self that come to the forefront.  We may not be sure we’ll really like the new role or stick with it for long.  It may trigger the fear of loss of acceptance from relationships or communities that were formed based on our old identity.  Will the friendships follow us on our new journey into parenthood or move across country?

Some aspects of our identity are formed by the responses we receive from others.  We subconsciously agree with how they “see us” and support it through how we represent ourselves to them.  This is particularly true with family. Parents want their children to be a certain way, to help the child be successful in life and to make the parent feel more comfortable. These expectations create a silent requirement to perform in a way that meets the approval of our caretakers, molding our public-facing identity. The identity we show others is often not the essence of our true Self. It is a safer projection of what we feel comfortable revealing to the world in order to be accepted.

As adults we have the opportunity to revisit some of the aspects of our identity that were formed based on our environment or expected family role. We can notice where these are no longer true for us and psychically update the aspect of our seventh chakra, where “the way we show ourselves to the world” is stored.  We may need to heal some wounds or change certain “pictures” we have of ourselves to activate this healing. Calling on the assistance of a spiritual mentor or clairvoyant healer in this process allows us to see beyond our own limitations.

If you are ready for an easy identity update, send a psychic request to your Akashic/Soul record keeper to update our identity to present time. You don’t need to delve into the quicksand here, keep it light. But if you see a specific false belief that continues to alter the way you show up in the world, you can take it deeper with a detailed request of what you are ready to remove, and what belief you would like to replace it with. Always remember to fill-in your aura with the vibration of your own essence before completing a healing meditation.

The word control has a bad rap.  It’s associated with being anal, uptight, rigid, difficult and domineering.  There are ways that control supports our health and others that block us from having joy.  The two primary faces of control that we look at as we cultivate our intuitive awareness are:

1)      Control that sets a clear boundary for our energetic space

2)      Control of others, an intrusion into their energetic space

This first type of control helps us maintain “seniority” or “authority” over our energetic space.  In activating this type of control we claim our true power to be the one calling the shots regarding our soul’s experience in this body.  When we don’t exercise seniority in our psychic space (sixth chakra, center of head), other people’s energy and the energy of spiritual entities (beings without a body) can get in our aura and alter our emotions and perspective.

The presence of another’s energy in our psychic space, alters our clarity and drains our power.  One indicator that someone’s energy is in your space, versus your own thoughts seeking them out, is a thought of them that pops into your mind while you are doing another focused activity.  For example your mind is engaged in a project or conversation, thinking a specific line of thought then – bink – out of nowhere their name or a thought of them interrupts your thoughts. 

It does no harm to move their energy out of your psychic space and give yourself room.  This can be done using the simple visualization of their energy moving out of the center of your head into a bubble and sending that bubble of their energy back to them.

The second type of control has earned its bad rap, yet it is generated from our human nature, so no one is immune.  From the earliest age we develop abilities to control and manipulate others to get our needs met.  It’s a survival skill and comes from a place of innocence.  As we grow-up, especially if our basic needs are not met, these skills may evolve into unhealthy controlling behaviors that intrude in other people’s energetic space.  Often they show up in the guise of trying to help someone, provide advice or fix something we perceive is broken in them.  Whenever the attempt to heal or help is engaged without the permission and consent of the person you have energy on, it becomes controlling and has negative results.

Most controlling behavior is subconscious. The controller perceives they are doing something positive to help the person they are trying to control.  But it doesn’t feel that way to the person being controlled.  Even if it sounds good, it still feels sticky-icky when help comes from a place of control.  And the deeper motivation behind it is always to make the person controlling feel better.  The out-of-control healer (OUCH) intrudes into our psychic space. This disrupts our clarity and undermines our personal power.  

As an exercise in consciousness we can use our intuition to notice when we are pushing an agenda, not staying neutral to someone’s choices or pain. This usually results in wanting to fix their problem or take away their suffering.  These are the points where we are most likely to invade their space with unwanted help, trying to make ourselves feel more comfortable by controlling our perception of their pain.

To develop our intuitive awareness we need to heal our use of control energy.  This happens when we exercise seniority over our space and become conscious of our controlling behavior, shifting into a place of neutrality around another’s choices and experiences.  Then we can truly help them in ways that honor their own spiritual seniority.

Awhile back I spent some time reflecting with a friend on what a great job would look like. Without focusing on the form it would take, we listed the types of experiences I would like to have with co-workers, clients and the company. The values, environment, support to do my job, working hours, how I would feel, how much time I wanted alone or interacting with others. The door was open in my view to self-employment, working for a company and the form of vocation. I made my wish list into two-pages of affirmations focused on what I’d like to feel in my work and income earning space. For a month I read the list every day reminding myself of what I desired to create and adding the occasional fresh possibility. Then I got distracted by life and let it sit in a drawer for a year.

When I came back to my wish list, I was in the process of considering a job offer that would allow me the time to do my soul’s purpose work as well as have a steady income working part-time for a technology company doing work I also love to do. In writing out my wish list I had realized that I had a diversity of needs that may not all be met through one type of work. I was amazed at how the job being offered lined up with my vision.

The desire for meaningful work haunts so many of us. Often we have a lack of clarity on what a great career would be for us. I discovered that by removing the labels of the job function and type of business, focusing on a how I want to feel and live day-to-day, I was able to create vibrational clarity for my career space. Following the Law of Attraction I chose to shift my energy to match what I desired until it showed up.

Beyond fleshing out our needs and desires for a work space we can use meditation tools to prepare our energetic body to receive what our hearts desire. Here’s a simple meditation for cleaning out and architecting our career space:

  • In a meditation space, start with visualizing a fresh grounding cord, the attachment from the base of your spine to the earth. This root creates a solid foundation.
  • Imagine a rose floating a couple of feet in front of you and notice the stem of the rose running down into the earth. This is our career cleanout rose. See any belief or energy held in your body that is blocking a positive work experience move out of your aura and into the rose. Some examples to cleanout: confusion, fear of failure, control, financial fear, the belief that work has to be hard, other people’s judgments, self-judgment. When this rose is full of all that unneeded energy, cut the stem and send it off to a faraway place and watch it explode.
  • Visualize a new rose for your career design/vision. Visualize dropping into the blossom of the rose all of the energies you would like to experience in your work space. Some examples: ease, financial prosperity, respect, fun, work/life balance, flexibility, intellectual stimulation or inspiration. When the rose is full of all that you want to create, ask your higher power/God to bless it, cut the stem and release it to the universe to seed your vision.

Some people fuel their life by tapping into the energy of others.  The most skilled energy consumers find a way to hook into us and keep us hanging.  Part of their pattern is use of a compelling promise that goes unfulfilled. It is sticky to keep us from detaching from them.  This type of draining relationship connection feeds on our deepest desires, making it particularly hard to reclaim our power.

We may notice the relationship has us waiting on a future return but subconsciously feel there’s a payoff in it for us, the fulfillment of something we need.  Our desire may be the love they offer, the purpose we feel from helping them, a sense of being valued, or the influence we may gain from connection to their projected power. I call this the hook and retreat energy dynamic. 

This friend, lover or family member frequently says or insinuates the value of staying connected to them is in a future promise.  “When I do ______, you’re going to get ______.”  When I make a lot of money, when I become famous, when I get a divorce, when I get promoted, when I die, when I finish whatever I am doing that requires me to ask you for more energy than I give you in return.  Unfortunately the time of rebalancing rarely comes.  The energy consumer hasn’t figured out how to generate their own power so they seek it in outside sources.  If they do finally achieve a goal, there’s no lasting payout for us because their target changes to a future date.

We all have been on both sides of energy exchange; no one is immune to moments of giving or taking out-of-balance. But when we experience hook and retreat, our body will let us know through a sensation of tightness or queasiness in our belly.  This is the location of our third chakra, where we activate our personal power.  The body notices that our power is being redirected.  The result is less energy for our own creations and a sense of being off-balance. 

The hook and retreat relationship has moments that make us feel crazy.  The words, actions and energy of the energy consumer are questionable enough to evoke a sense of uncertainty.  Our intuition is trying to make us aware of the deception.  The energy consumer always believes their own story so they don’t realize they are being deceptive.  The imbalance created from the cord into our core makes it hard to see clearly and remove ourselves or renegotiate the relationship. 

Here are a couple of tools you can practice to reclaim your power when you have been hooked:

  • Clean out your 3rd chakra.  Visualize a gold rose and see it mopping out that belly area front to back, soaking up all the energy that is not yours in that space.  Imagine the rose flying somewhere far away and dissipating.  Call your energy back to you from any person you’ve given your power away to and fill the empty space with your own vibration.
  • Visualize a Protection Rose in the space between you and this person.  The intention of the rose is to filter out any attempts to attach to your energy.

The stealth aspect of this behavioral pattern is how it taps into our subconscious desire.  We are seduced by a subversive agenda.  The truth that we are never going to get the need met is hard to see. It feels possible and it feels strong.   By reclaiming our energy space we have the opportunity to see the relationship more clearly and gain energy to use for our own creations.
