Over and over life presents us with unexpected opportunities that stretch our comfort zone. There really is no such thing as getting comfortable unless you avoid contact with others. Even nature brings experiences that affect your energy and require shifts to plans. Ultimately, we all desire to stay centered and be at peace regardless of what happens in our life.

From the energy perspective, you have peace when you have graceful boundaries with the people in your life, feel grounded, refill your energy regularly and have balanced exchanges with others.

Sounds simple, but as far as I can tell it’s the most complex part of being a soul in a human body.

People want more than you have to give at times. Their fears or trauma get triggered, so they grab on to you to ground and regain their balance. It can really throw you off. They make mistakes that impact you. Or you make a choice that has unexpected consequences. Having something unexpected rock your world, including someone who brings destabilizing energy, is like getting caught in a storm.

You’re on a hike in the mountains on a sunny day. You feel at peace.

Thunder rolls in the distance. Your inner-voice says, “I know this one. Got it. No problem.”

Lightening ripples across looming dark clouds you see beyond blue sky. Do you feel at peace now?

Hair stands up on your arms as the storm moves your way. Your inner-voice is like, “Maybe it’s a good idea for me to change my plan, turn around, move to lower ground, seek shelter?”

Do you feel at peace now?

Lightening is hitting the high points. Torrents of rain are pelting down. You didn’t bring a rain jacket. Your inner-voice is running through all sorts of possible bad scenarios laced with criticism, “You know better. You didn’t tell anyone where you were hiking. You didn’t come prepared. Your intuition nudged you to turn around. If you had, you would be back to your car by now.”

Your drenched, tiny hail pelting your skin. Thankfully the lightening has passed. But not the self-critical voice. Your energy was thrown off. How do you regain your peace?

Life happens. Your peace will be tested over and over again. Sometimes it will be due to a choice you made that has consequences you didn’t expect. Sometimes it will be others energy that impacts you and requires some work to reclaim your peace.

When something is stealing your peace, its most important to return to the basics (see diagram).

  1. Visualize your grounding cord. A fresh one, deeply rooted in the earth. (RED ARROW)
  2. Reset your aura bubble. This is me. That is you. We can love each other, have compassion, help each other and NOT be IN each other’s bubble. (BLUE CIRCLE)
  3. Call your energy back to you. Imagine it coming from the person or situation that your peace was lost to, pouring back in to fill you up through the top of your head. (GOLD SUN & ARROW)

The tests to your peace will come. That’s a guarantee. But you always have the power to reclaim your peace by reclaiming your energy.

Honor Your Sacred Life

When the day-to-day feels lacking. When you’ve got what you wanted but it doesn’t satisfy. What you want feels unclear or impossibly out of reach. When you wonder what is required to make you feel alive, at peace, purposeful… it is time for ritual.

I believe much of the lack and disappointment we feel, even in the midst of prosperity, is because we are missing ways to honor our sacred life. For thousands of years humans have marked transitions, acknowledged seasons, expressed gratitude, and made symbolic gestures to the Universe to make their desires known. Ritual honors the sacred aspects of life. We have forgot our rituals. And we are suffering for it.

Sure, we have holidays, take vacations, make lists of our goals, and celebrate what we have accomplished. But ritual is deeper. It is not about doing and achieving, rather connection, fulfillment and being on your path. The process of ritual requires getting clear, asking for what you want, while holding the possibility of it in your heart, before it happens.

Rituals provide the container to align all aspects of your Self with intention: mind, body, heart and spirit. When you invoke ritual, you make a choice with your mind, take action with your body, feel the gratitude and desire with your heart and align with your soul purpose.

Conversations with the Universe aren’t as common in our time but they are just as essential to thriving. A ritual is a conversation with the Universe. It is a way to express yourself that doesn’t require words.

You may dance your ritual, bathe as a ritual, sit under a starry sky and ask for guidance as a ritual. You may create an altar of pine cones, rocks and feathers, plant seeds or allow your tears to fall into a river. You may wrap your shoulders with a blanket, imagine being held by the Universe, or hike to a mountain top and sing your heart out.

In all of these you are honoring your desire with intention and sacred process.

Rituals don’t cost money or require elaborate performance. They are from the heart. Feeling alive, at peace and purposeful, require an investment in your sacred life. Ritual is a powerful way to honor and infuse this sacredness into everything you do.

Meditation is a pathway to strong intuition and inner-peace. You don’t need to sit with your eyes closed to meditate. I’m an active person and need to move my body. Walking meditation is the way that I have been able to more consistently commit to meditation and insure I regularly set my energy to my truth. In this video I share with you the steps I take to clear out and reset my energy field with walking meditation.

For many years I’ve traveled frequently for business, staying at hotels. A room may look physically clean, but be littered with the energy of prior guests! To insure I sleep well and don’t pick up any unwanted energy a guest has left behind, I set the space of the room to my vibration.

You can too! I share the visualization steps below.

This is helpful when you are staying at a friend or family member’s home too. It will help you sleep better. Setting the energy of a space is not taking it over. It leaves the space cleaner than when you found it.

I was reminded of the importance of this when I visited a spiritually tuned-in friend in Taos, New Mexico over the Memorial Day weekend. The first night as I lay down to sleep, I automatically started my space setting visualization. I noticed the energy in the room was uncomfortable with my attempt to set the space and figured it was because I was staying in a home of a powerful spiritual woman who set her space intentionally.

Still I didn’t sleep well. There was a shaky energy I felt in the room that kept me from true restfulness.

The next morning as I soaked in the gentle spring sun while writing, I felt that shakiness again. Since I was sitting outside of the house it was easier see the source. I saw an old Indian woman, heavy-set and draped in many layers of clothes. She wrote codes of spiritual protection into the thick walls of the adobe house. Yet she came from a time much older than the structure.

I psychically saw that the magic had been set on the dirt that was used to make the adobe bricks for the walls. Her codes were written to destabilize the energy of an enemy. Thus the shakiness I felt. It was a form of protection for her tribe and the land.

My hostess also noticed that over the course of living in this home her voice had become periodically shaky without a physical explanation. With permission from my hostess, I used spiritual tools to end the agreement between the code maker and dirt that was used to build the house. That night I was able to set the space in the guest room to my vibration and slept perfectly.

When you visit family, friends, travel for work, on vacation or simply want to reset the sleep space in your own bedroom, take these three steps to have a more restful sleep.

  1. Visualize a red rose in the center of the room that is as tall as you are, with the blossom of the rose as big as a stop sign.
  2. See eight golden cords with one end connected to the blossom of the rose, four connected to each of the top corners of the room by the ceiling and four connected tow the bottom corners of the room by the floor. If there are more than four corners add more gold cords.
  3. Intend that the rose and gold cords hold this space for you while you are in it. Claim the space as clear of outside energies and in present time. You can include other loved ones sharing the space with you in this intention.

For extra credit, visualize a big pitcher full of your own special cocktail of energies you would like to experience while staying in this space (rest, peace, happiness, comfort, playfulness, etc.). Then imagine poring the magical energy into the room from above, filling it up with all those good vibrations. The new intention overrides energy that was in the space before you arrived.

Many clairvoyant clients want to know, “What is my purpose?”

Imagine the sensation of knowing you are on the right path, of clearly explaining to others your purpose in words that they understand. Imagine getting up every morning knowing your purpose is the foundation of all that you do. This thought feels sooo good.

Your purpose may lead you to make a difference in the world, or achieve measurable success.  The problem with the concept of your life’s purpose is that it comes with expectation. By living your purpose you expect you won’t have struggles, challenges, or times when you have to wait until Spirit speaks.

The thing is your soul has an agenda when you are born. Some call it destiny. The soul’s agenda is focused on what it wants to learn, needs to fulfill from past commitments, or desires to experience in this lifetime. Your soul does not have the concept of finding a purpose.

Knowing your purpose is not the secret that will bring you peace. It is the other way around. Being at peace with your Self and your choices, allows purpose to reveal itself in your life.

Over Memorial Day weekend I spent time in Taos, New Mexico where I visited the Mable Dodge Luhan House and went to an exhibit of her life. She was a muse of such profound magnitude. Her passion for art and connection drew many artists from around the world to the beauty of New Mexico where they were inspired to create at levels they never had before.

When I was visiting her home, inspired by the courageous life she lived, I noticed how in retrospect you can see her life purpose. While she was alive it may have seemed that since she wasn’t a renowned artist herself, her role wasn’t that important. Yet she impacted the world of art and the preservation of Native American culture through creating connections and relationships in ways that changed history.

When I first discovered her house I was at a writing workshop, in the beginning of my spiritual awakening, freshly divorced and deep in the throes of healing my past. My eyes were focused on understanding what got me there and why. I was seeking my purpose. Writing had always been deeply fulfilling to me. I wondered if being a writer was my purpose.

Nearly two decades later I see my life purpose from a very different perspective. I don’t believe purpose is an external experience. I trust that by being at peace with my essence, feeling at peace regardless of the outside circumstances, I can be purposeful in whatever I choose to experience.

After I die people may say, “Natalie’s life purpose was to…” They determined my purpose based on one notable aspect of the impact my life made. The outsider doesn’t know everything my soul was busy learning or the complex purpose of this life for my soul.

At the moment, my soul wants to teach peace. Not at university, not in social uprising, not as a regimen. I want to teach peace as the path to soul freedom. Peace with the Self. Peace with living, aging, grieving, not knowing. Peace with success, fame, and failure, the shadow. Peace with the body, peace of mind, peace in loving, peace in letting go. Peace the soul can take with you when you die.

I’m not sure this can be taught but my prayer for you is to find peace and make from that whatever purpose you desire.

The world has been pretty wacky lately. As much as I’d like to be able to give you a magic remedy to lift you up out of the mire, the truth is there is no such thing. But there are a couple tools that will help you claim your inner-peace.

One is to connect with the essence of your soul’s presence in your body. This can be done on a bike ride or on a yoga mat. There are no rules aside from breathing and being aware of the present moment. In order to let go of thoughts of the past or the future, let your awareness follow your breath. The more you do this the easier it is to return to your center and recognize the energy that isn’t yours but is affecting you. My next point!

Not everything you feel is your own. Knowing this helps you ride the waves rather than be pummeled in the surf, to stay sane in the midst of a wacky world. The second tool is to identify and clear other people’s energy out of your space. Let’s do that!

What you feel that is NOT generated from within has three primary sources:

  1. Absorbing someone else’s emotions such as sadness, anger or fear
  2. A direct energy whack, such as being blamed, shamed or punished
  3. Group energy, collective beliefs or feelings

Absorbing emotions can happen through supporting someone you love or unconsciously healing someone you are physically around who is suffering.

An energetic whack, has two parts: your feelings generated from it and the energy sent at you by the person. Psychology says understand and heal your feelings but misses the second part.

For example, a client of mine is a teacher and one of her students needed to be sent out of class due to behavior that was preventing others from learning. The student’s parent went into a rage on the teacher rather than acknowledge that her child was out of line. She blamed her for shaming her son.

My client was completely thrown off. She questioned herself and how she handled the situation. She had followed normal protocol. The student had been given multiple opportunities to change his behavior. While her colleagues validated that she did no wrong, she couldn’t find peace. The energy whack from the parent was in her space.  Until the energy that wasn’t hers was moved out, she felt “off.”

Group energy impacts can include world events, the community where you live, where you work, worship or socialize in-person or online. The news, politics, natural disasters, beliefs about wealth and poverty. These are compounded by the number of people feeling and radiating out discontent and fear. Collective energy gets into everyone’s space. Clear it out regularly!

Start with the breathing tool, then move into this simple visualization:

  • Imagine a bubble suspended in the air in front of your body
  • Intend that any energy that isn’t yours move out of your body into this bubble
  • It may or may not be attached to a specific person or experience. For example, move out all financial fear that is not yours. Ranging from the global economy to the specific fears of your spouse or parents.
  • Name the feeling behind the energy you are moving out: disappointment, pessimism, depression, anger, jealousy, shame, exhaustion…
  • When the bubble is full of all of the energy that is NOT you, watch it float to a faraway place in your mind’s eye and pop.
  • Then call your energy back to yourself from the sources you identified.  See yourself being filled up with the energy of your own essence, like liquid gold flowing into the top of your head.

Hopefully it helps a little bit to know the influence of wacky global, cultural or social energy around you has a real impact.  It’s not just you and you’re not alone. Use this awareness and these tools to claim your inner-peace.

Spiritual Tests

Life tests us when we least expect it. We can get metaphysical and see it as an opportunity for spiritual growth, yet tests challenge us.  They feel uncomfortable, stressful, confusing and even painful, they may bring up our anger or disappointed. Tests are asking us, or forcing us, to change. It can be as subtle as a shift of our thought patterns or as explicit as how we live every day.

Our physical body, mind, emotions and soul are always unconsciously striving for a state of alignment with each other.  An illness may cause our mind to struggle with our body’s lack of cooperation.  The death of a loved one may cause our heart to question the body’s purpose as we are left behind while their soul has moved on.

In the midst of being tested, there is a temptation and a tendency to suppress discomfort.  But our physical and emotional discomforts are indicators. They will guide us through life’s tests, if we listen. They bring awareness to our combined physical, mental and spiritual state of being.

To lessen the discomfort without just postponing it, we have to pause to listen to our intuition. The act of stilling the mind through meditation, tuning into our breath (body) and listening to our soul, may initially draw our attention to the discomfort. But with a bit of commitment to breathing through the edgy space, it will reduce our suffering.

When we listen to our inner-guidance it shows us what we need in order to walk through the fire of life’s test. It may tell us it is time to step away from a relationship or job. It may point out that it is time to commit to our health by changing the way we eat or to taking regular time for our creativity.

Meditation is deep listening.  By listening we are consciously participating in alignment of our physical experience with our souls intention.  This alone reduces stress regardless of life test we are experiencing.

The beauty is that we don’t have to stop living to listen.  As Thich Nhat Hanh says we can invite inner-peace through consciously breathing in and out no matter where we are or what challenge we are facing.  It is that simple.

I write to you while traveling in New Zealand. Exploring another culture I’m always curious about the soul of the people.  The Maori (indigenous New Zealanders) have a term “turangawaewae” to express what all humans desire but few languages have a word for, the sense that our life is purposeful, fulfilling and that we have a place to stand.

I learned about turangawaewae when reading the story of a local painter and outdoor enthusiast. She takees multi-month kayaking journeys along the shores of New Zealand and paints what she sees in these remote parts of the coastline. In combining these two passions she she’d found her turangawaewae, her place to stand. The concept is defined as, “places where we feel especially empowered and connected… our foundation, our place in the world, our home.”

Finding one’s turangawaewae is a challenge for the majority of people I know. Even those with a clear and early artistic expression, talent or passion often struggle with feeling at peace creating space for it in their lives. Society conditions us that our purpose should be actualized in a job, financial pressures take priority over life balance, and we generally don’t receive any guidance from family, school or society regarding discovery of places we feel empowered and connected. We desire turangawaewae but don’t have a word for it in the English language or guidance to discover it.

If turangawaewae came easy maybe we wouldn’t value it or as someone once said, if you see a path ahead of you and each step to take, know that it’s not your path. It’s someone elses path. Your path only gets revealed one moment at a time, one choice at a time, as you live it. Suddenly you realize you’ve arrived somewhere even if you didn’t see that your experiences were adding up to somthing. You know its your turangawaewae because you’re at peace for longer periods of time, feeling empowered and on solid ground.

As I look back at my own journey to turangawaewae it was never a clear path. I was always curious about the spiritual world, what is unseen in the universe. From as early as I can remember I felt a deep sense of fulfillment from writing. As a young girl some of my sweetest memories are of writing poetry and prose among the grass and daffodils in our front pasture. But I often struggled with how these aspects of myself fit into what I was creating with my life and purpose.

I was attracted to self-reflect and heal incongruencies in my heart and mind as a teenager. This led me on a path of working with many spiritual, physical and psychological healing modalities. Then in my late 20’s I made a choice to learn healthier boundaries around my psychic experience, not even knowing how to define it at the time. I started clairvoyant training to help myself translate what I was experiencing and feel more at peace when in the the presence of others who were suffering.

Throughout my life I unconsciously empathically felt the energy or emotions of people around me. I often didn’t know when I felt bad that what I was absorbing or responding to in someone around me. For example, if I worked with a person who was depressed or angry, it would drain my energy.

For seven years off-and-on I took classes and regularly applied the tools for myself, becoming more and more clear on what I felt and what I was sensing around me. Feeling less and less drained or “off” from the energy of those I encountered. Eventually I was inspired to take the full clairvoyant certification training, again not planning to do something with it beyond using the knowledge to inform my own life experience and vanquish lingering doubts I had regarding my intuition.

The program had both a training and practicum component. Learning the tools, then applying them with other students or those who came to the school for student readings. I also began to share what I learned with friends outside of the classroom. I found it exceptionally fulfilling at the end of each reading to have shared what I had to offer to another soul as they were looking within to find more peace in their life.

In parallel I had been writing in the format of a personal blog for years when I found I was writing about self-reflective concepts, my passion for the soul’s experience and intuition. Combining these two expressions has brought me a deeper sense of inner-peace and fulfillment. Now over nearly 15 years after starting down the path of clairvoyant training and many more years of writing, I feel I have I had found my turangawaewae, the place where I feel the most purpose, empowered and connected both with my own essense and with others.

The mind does an excellent job of balancing our bank account and other logical tasks. But when it looks to translate our emotional experiences or the more mystical intuitive “knowing”, it gets stuck.  Over analyzing is the number one block to our intuition. We mentally stack the bits of and pieces of our experiences next to each other looking for an answer.

There’s no winning when the mind tries to figure out what we “sense” intuitively using evidence, logic and proof. Or if it tries to figure out what we can’t know, what hasn’t happened yet or is not ready to be revealed.

The monkey mind’s searching, busy; spinning in circles on the same unanswerable thought is merely a distraction from listening. Our inner guidance can only be accessed when we stop trying to figure it out and listen.

I’m never at peace when my mind is stuck thinking and rethinking on a topic, trying to figure out what it means and how that meaning applies to my life or what I need to do in response. The mental effort gets in the way of listening and trusting the inner-knowing.

Recently I’ve been practicing “living in the question” by asking my inner-guidance a question with a commitment to not “think” about the answer.  I simply set the intention that I’m listening for an answer and put it into the universal flow to percolate.

Using this practice, I find that answers to my deepest questions don’t jump into my mind like a thought. They come through experiences life offers me that I feel a “yes” to.  And as I say yes, I realize, “Hey, this is the answer to the question I sent out to the universe.”

The wonderful thing about the mind is that we get to both benefit from its skill and direct it. To turn off the monkey mind we need to remind ourselves when there is no answer we can “think up.” The answer exists but it’s not one the analytical mind is responsible for deriving.

Here’s an experiement to practice release of the monkey mind, write down whatever your mind is churning on and if you have any possible answers already milling in your head, tell yourself that there are possibilities you can’t even imagine.  Then ask your inner-guidance to show you and set the question aside while you go about your life. This is where the magic comes. By releasing the attachment to “figuring it out” with your mind you are allowing your intuition to inform you.
